Mission Statement

Extreme Outfit Fridays is about doing things that scare you. This concept was conceived one day in the doldrums of graduate school, by my dear friend, mathematical accomplice, and fashion guru. The challenge: wear one extreme outfit a week, as a challenge to ourselves, and a way to remember how much fun it is to look as intense as you feel. Wearing an extreme outfit takes some courage, it will certainly elicit comments, and I can assure you, dear reader, that walking into a calculus class with one long dangly peacock feather in your ear is no easy task.

But don't be misled, this isn't a blog about fashion. Extreme can go in any direction, but it always means stepping out of your comfort zone, and scaring yourself just a little bit. This is a philosophy that translates well into the rest of life, and one that I carry with me as I embark on this crazy journey fueled by mathematics, fashion, running, good food, and, of course, dancing! It's so easy to feel scared by the unknown, and it so easy to let this fear stand in your way. That nervous gut wrenching anxiety that comes before a big trip, a first date, a public speech, or attempting to attain a degree that feels way out of your reach, is sometimes enough to stop someone dead in their tracks. But Nay, I say! Bring it on! I think T.I. said it best: "I'm the opposite of moderate, immaculately polished, with the spirit of a hustler and the swagger of a college kid."

In the next month, I have some big things going on. I'm headed to Chile on the 11th to present my original research (gaaaahhh!) at my first professional conference (gaaaahhh!) and then spend a month (gaaaaahhh!) traveling and indulging in all that Chile has to offer. I hope to get the blog up and running before then, so I can delight you with stories and pictures galore. Happy reading my fellow extremists!
