A Few Tidbits From NPR Headquarters

Now I've been working at NPR for almost 10 weeks, and I haven't told you any of the gossip. What a lame friend I am. I joke, I'm a great friend, just a lame blogger. But now that I've had some time to marinate in this temple of news, I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite things about being world's oldest most over-qualified intern at NPR.

First, there are tiny desk concerts about once a week. This means that around 1:30, the disembodied voice of Bob Boilen comes over the PA and says "a tiny desk concert will be starting on the fourth floor in 15 minutes." So you run up to the fourth floor, and there, wedged behind his tiny desk, will be Patty Griffin, waiting to play a 15 minute concert for the fresh-to-death NPR employees

[disclaimer: don't get too jealous, I wasn't actually here for Patty Griffin]

Next, and I for some reason I can't quite come down from this particular power trip, it's beyond fun to call people and say "Hello, this is Anna Somebody calling from National Public Radio." They get so excited, as so too would I if somebody from NPR ever called me.

Lastly, and this one's a little weird, I love sitting in the recording booths. There are small graduate-student-office-sized studios sprinkled all over the building where you can record phone calls, cut tape, and work on mixing audio. They have nice dimmer switches on the lights, and they are absolutely totally sound proof. When you walk in and shut the extra heavy door you can actually feel the pressure change in your ears a little bit. I think in life I underestimate the importance of total and utter white-noise free silence. It's glorious.

Oh, and did I mention you can't shake a mic cable without hitting some big shot or bureau chief?

Now, 1.5 more weeks, and maybe some more gossip coming your way.
