Fitness Day

This morning I ran the Lightfoot Summer Series 7 Miler in Norwalk, Connecticut...and it was SooOOOoooo Good! After going out way to fast at my last race, my goal for the race today was to practice really good pacing. The goal was to start with 9 min. miles, and then check in with myself at the half-way, and drop to 8:30's. And I'm happy to report that my weary bones crossed the finish line at 1:01:18, which is precisely an 8:45 average pace!

I'll tell you, it wasn't easy. I definitely was struggling, and after crossing the finish line, the last thing I wanted to do was run another 6.1 miles. But I'm half-way through my 12 week training plan, and feeling good about it.

But that wasn't the best thing that happened to me today. After the race, we went to the beach to dip our feet in the sound, and stumbled across a triathlon, in full swing. Cool, right? But it wasn't until we got closer, and saw a bike like this:

and one like this:

that we realized this was no Lance Armstrong-esque affair. This was a 7-9 year old division, Kids Triathlon! I had no idea there was such a thing. Without a doubt, the cutest thing I have every seen. These kids were busting out in their little kid bathing suits, and little kid mountain bikes, and then blasting across the finish line in that two-piece swimsuit and running shoes combo that no adult would be caught dead wearing.

Totally sweet, and while it's definitely a bit intense, totally appropriate. Kids love "open water swimming," except they just call it swimming. They also love "cycling," except the call it riding bike. Running, I guess that's just what you call "getting somewhere fast." My kid self would have felt like she'd died and gone to heaven. Plus, I loved the two-piece and sneaker look, maybe with a long oversized t-shirt to really make the look pop.
