A New Semester is Afoot

My syllabus is written, my lesson is planned, my french press is loaded and ready for action tomorrow, the first day of the new semester. There's only one thing left to do: choose my first-day footwear.

I cannot overstate the importance of wearing the right shoes on the first day of class. It sets the tone for the entire semester. Who am I going to be? To me, red high-heels convey a nonchalant Zoolanderian, who-cares-it's-just-math attitude. While sensible flats give off the more serious, this-is-gonna-get-so-real-I-may-need-to-get-physical-and-jump-around. On the other hand, sneakers -- I know, yuck -- have more of an alright-people-let's-get-this-over-with vibe. So, who am I?

My one objective each break -- along with spending blissful days digging into hard research problems -- is to find the perfect pair of shoes to start the semester.

Last year these babies did the trick, and this year I present these red patent-leather Broques from the good people at Clarks. They're red-shoe enough to say "Relax, it's just discrete math" but flat enough to say "this is not a joke." And yet, they have that laced-up defiant sneakerish quality. Perfection.

With that I wish everyone a fruitful and well-heeled start to the new semester. And a bon voyage to San Antonio for the Joint Math Meetings. If you're going (or not) I'll be covering the meetings for the official Joint Meetings Blog. Stay tuned!
