A Bare Bear? Barely!

Imagine this: my best lady love Annie and I, were just strolling along on the UVA grounds, minding our business, when Annie said "hey, what's a homophone?" [citation needed, as clearly Annie is very smart and knows what a homophone is]. I said, a homophone is two words that sound the same, and maybe are spelled the same, but have a different meaning, such as:

  1. bear (n): The thing that ate Timothy Treadwell.
  2. bare (adj): The way I like to imagine the hunky bearlike man at the gym doing pull-ups.
We deliberated momentarily, and she said, well what about
  1. bear (v): The thing we have the right to do with arms.
Now, that one's extra special, because it's a homophone to both bear and bare, but it's also a homonym for bear. That is, it's a word that's spelled the same but has a different meaning. But wait! There's more! What about
  1. bare (v): The thing I do with all of my secrets after I've had a few glasses of wine.

Stop right there. This is a four-way, homophone, homonym, power-square. Behold!

Double lines denote the homonym and homophone pairs. It's a beauty, isn't it? So you can image, we positively squealed with delight at the thought of this! Ah, the simple pleasure in life. Things like this remind me what a gift it is that I already speak English. I'll bet you crazy anomalies like this don't exist in esperanto. Hang on, give me a week to become fluent and I'll let you know.
