Last night's film was Melancholia. I don't want to say too much about it, because the plot is so subtle and intricately woven. It's best you should discover it on your own. But wow, what an experience.
The film (yes, I call this one a film) opens with a 5 minute montage of really sickeningly beautiful imagery, the sort of stuff that is kind of viscerally disturbing, but you can't help but drink in every detail. This perfectly preps you, mind, body, and soul, for the experience you are about to have.

Kirsten Dunst gave a powerful performance as Justine, one of our two main heroines. But as always, the real prize goes to the unparalleled Charlotte Gainsbourg. That woman. She's one of these people who is so beautiful, and so hideous, and just so glorious to take in- I can't take my eyes off of her. Obviously a perfect choice for Trier and his dichotomous aesthetic.

It's discomforting, disquieting, but oh so beautiful. And of course, it gives one a lot to mull over. Life, death, truth. The big ones.
